The College of Animal Welfare (CAW) has launched an advanced diploma in veterinary nursing.

The Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse) course will be primarily offered via distance learning with added tutor support and aims to provide VNs with the chance to advance their knowledge and skills to a mastery level.

CAW said it would build on the RCVS’ day one skills and competencies and also provide an SQP qualification.

Nurse skills

The programme, awarded by VetSkill, will see registered veterinary nurses studying advanced professional practice and legislation, consulting skills, nutrition and diet, medical clinics, prescribing and dispensing, coaching and mentoring, and practical practice nurse skills.

CAW said it had also placed a strong emphasis on professional development, helping veterinary nurses develop advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills required for success and progression in the profession.

Programme

Louise Chappell, senior veterinary nursing lecturer at CAW, said of the launch: “We are thrilled to introduce this new programme, which marks an exciting development for the college. By equipping registered veterinary nurses with advanced skills and in-depth knowledge, this diploma will not only enhance their capabilities but also empower them to take on more specialised and impactful roles within their practices.

“This course is designed to inspire excellence and provide nurses with the tools they need to build on the already exceptional standards of care in the profession, ensuring continued innovation and professional growth.”
